My name is Htoo Wai, and I’m a portrait and conceptual photographer based in the vibrant, culturally rich landscapes of Myanmar. Through my work, I strive to blend the raw emotions of human experiences with the imaginative depths of storytelling, creating images that linger in the heart and mind.

Who Am I?

Photography, for me, is more than a profession—it’s a language. A language that transcends words, connecting people through visual narratives. Growing up in Myanmar, a land where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony, I’ve always been inspired by the stories etched into the faces of its people, the vivid hues of its festivals, and the quiet resilience that defines everyday life here.

Whether I’m working with individuals, brands, or artistic collaborators, my goal is to craft photographs that don’t just “capture moments” but reveal souls and challenge perspectives.

Where Emotion Meets Light

Portraits are my first love. There’s something profoundly intimate about freezing a person’s essence in a single frame. My approach is rooted in authenticity—I aim to create a safe, collaborative space where subjects feel empowered to be their truest selves.

• Cultural Threads: Myanmar’s diverse ethnic tapestry often influences my work, whether through traditional attire, settings, or symbolic gestures.

Conceptual photography is where I let my imagination run wild. These projects are born from abstract ideas—dreams, social commentaries, or metaphors brought to life through symbolism, props, and digital artistry.

Recent themes I’ve explored include:

• Identity and Transformation: Using masks, mirrors, and dynamic poses to question how we perceive ourselves.
• Nature vs. Humanity: Contrasting Myanmar’s lush landscapes with urban decay to reflect environmental dialogues.
• Mythology Reimagined: Drawing from Burmese folklore to create surreal, otherworldly visuals.

Why Myanmar?

My homeland is an endless source of inspiration. From the golden stupas of Bagan to the bustling streets of Yangon, Myanmar’s beauty lies in its contrasts. Here, ancient traditions thrive alongside a rapidly evolving creative scene. By weaving these elements into my work, I hope to share Myanmar’s spirit with the world—one photograph at a time.
